Why We Raise South Down Babydoll Sheep

We Love Babydolls! When my husband said he wanted sheep we thought long and hard about which type of sheep would be a good fit for our family. We were new to sheep and didn’t know too much about the different types of breeds. We began our online search and talked to lots of people. A friend of ours had some babydoll sheep and told us of their sweet, gentle personalities and their endearing nature. We decided this was the breed we wanted to try!
For those of you who are not familiar with Southdown Babydoll Sheep, they are an ancient breed of sheep from Sussex County, England. They are known for being extremely hardy and have excellent wool. Their fleece is in the class of cashmere and is ideal to blend with other fibers. They are small in size and are polled (no horns) and non-aggressive by nature.
These sheep are great pets and companions and just being around them seems to make us all just a little bit happier. They have a “teddy bear” face and always seem to be smiling. These sheep do best when they are with companions, either other babydolls or other sheep or goats.
